Women in a rowboat on Sydney Harbour

Bild von Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons
This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William J Hall collection. The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races.
The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below.

Cribb and Foote family photo set in an oval flowered mount, ca. 1898

Bild von State Library of Queensland, Australia
Photographer: Unidentified
Location: Queensland, Australia
Description: Family photograph set in elaborately decorated page of a photo album from the Cribb and Foote Collection.
These bible-like albums with embossed leather covers, were often adorned with brass locks and ribbon-tie closures. Their thick gilt-edged pages were decorated with flowers, birds, laces, knots and bands, inspired by the Victorian enthusiasm for an eclectic range of ornament from Persian miniatures, Indian ivories, Imari porcelain and Moorish tiles to the mediaeval manuscript illuminations of the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.
